Tim Burton’s latest production – 9 – was released on an epic date of 09-09-09, creating a buzz amongst the cine-goers from the very beginning of its promotion. And as with any other Tim Burton movie, this movie too had a unique storyline and involved the application of the mind and a lot of concentration to digest the concept. And if you are a die-hard Burton fan, you would be disappointed to know that Johnny Depp doesn’t feature in this one. The producer-director rather choose Elijah wood (Frodo of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and Mumbo of Happy Feet) to lend his voice to the lead character – 9!
The story revolves around 9 tiny characters, each named from 1 to 9, whose bodies are made out of what appeared as sack to me. They have eyes that see to be like binoculars, and they walk around like real people – the only difference being that they are tiny. A scientist created a machine which could think on its own, and convert scrap into other machines, to be used in the war. The tables turn when the machines start thinking on their own and destroy the human race on the planet. The scientist creates these 9 characters, giving each of them a piece of their mind, their challenge being to put an end to the machine and is destruction. Will they be able to do it is what the rest of the film deals in.
Like any other Tim Burton movie, the animation and special effects are top notch. Some of he escape sequences are so awesomely directed. And the concept is mind boggling. The cast is superbly chosen, each doing justice to its character. What is not so great about this movie is the fact that the ending is a bit predictable. That is something that could have been avoided. Other wise, all in all, an entertaining film that running at less than 90 minutes, ends before you say “Now this is getting boring!?”
My Verdict: Catch it if you must. An unusual story – but you can also live without it! :)
